Pub Research

You may remeber that in my draft there is a shot where the lads are walking to the pub. If not here is a print screen of it.

This is one of my shots that I was least pleased with for my draft. These are a few of the problems I have with it.

- Only 3 of the 4 members are present
- The darkness takes abit away from the video quality
- All 3 of the present members have their hoods up which I don't think represents the genre of the band.

So I have decided to attempt to film it again with different circumstances.

Firstly, I need to attempt to use the same pub again but with all the members in daylight!!

This is a picture of the pub that I took during lighter hours where compare to the night the colour and quality appears much better.

If there is not an oppourtunity to get all of the lads from Lutterworth to Thurlaston where the pub is I need to look for an alternative, more convienient, pub. So I looked for one in the local area and on advisement of people in my class I have found one in Lutterworth that would be appropriate. It is called, The Shambles, this is a picture I found on google of the pub

I decided to get a better idea for where it is, so I found it on google maps.

For practical reasons of getting there I found the route from Lutterworth to the pub, luckily it is only 0.6 miles away from college.

Secondly, I need to make sure even though I am perfectly fine with the band members wearing hooded tops that they are not wearing there hoods upin the shots. When I see the hoods I think more of this:

Which isn't generally necessarilly bad but is not the apperance I am going for.

Finally, the last issuee is getting all of the lads there at the same time. Considering I go to college with all of them it is harder then you would think. Some of them have tendencies to miss single days which last week would of been ok but with the deadline being friday there is some risk attached.

Digipak Idea

This week is the deadline to finish the digipak and advert so of course I am now thinking more seriously on how to improve my drafts. One of the evaluation points that I was given was how the panel I have cropped below looks more like something a boy band would have rather then something an actual band would have, and frankly I agree but want to change it. My teacher showed me this album cover from a band kind of similar to mine called: 'The Crookes'. This is their 2012 album 'Hold Fast', and even if the band is not exactly like mine I still think I can take a lot of inspiration from it to make mine look more professional.

Progress over half term

Unfortunatly, 3 of the 4 members of my band have been on holiday during the half term break so not much filming has taken place. This means I am on tight shedule this week to finish my filming but with all the lads hopefully at college everyday it should be manageable

Possible Colour Palettes for Digipak/Advert

Colour palette 1 was my first idea probably because out of my 3 designs it is the simplest design and the 3 colours match the best which could be considered to be a good thing from making a clear idea by using well known matching colours, but could be a bad idea because this could make my digipak plain and not have anything interesting about it. Overall, I still think colour palette one could be used successfully.

Colour palette 2 was a bit of a random choice spurring from my idea that I could involve like a beige colour qaswell as black and white. I like this idea because I think it would be quite unique since these colouurs would not obviously go together.

I decided on the colours for colour palette 3 because I wanted to have at least one abstract idea with the colours so choosing a bold red and blue would have this effect. I think this idea could work but out of the 3 colour palettes I think this would need the clearest concept. Also, if i was to use this colour scheme I would consider swirching the red for pink but I am unsure whether this would fit in with the genre of my band.

Borrowed Tools

This is some of the kit I have borrowed for the filming of my music video:

This is a Sony DCR-SR58 Camcorder. Luckily, it belongs to a friend so I won't have deadlines on borrowing one from college and I can film shots whenever I want. Since I don't know much about technical things I found this list of features on the internet:

60x Zoom Vario-Tessar Lens
I'm not exactly sure what this is but this high quality Carl Zeiss optical system allows you to zoom into really small details with its 60x zoom range.
Steady ShotThis helps to minimise wobble and blurring caused by camera movement. This is good because currently I don't have a tripod.
Face DetectionThe HDR-SR58 will detect faces in your image frame and ensure that they are in focus, well exposed and have natural skin tone.
800k Sensor and VGA moviesThe high resolution 800k pixel CCD sensor ensures sharp video as well as good quality VGA still images.
2.7" Power-on LCDThe DCR-SR58 is equipped with a wide 2.7" touchscreen display that also has the clever function of turning the camera on when opened if desired.

Keyboard

I am fourtune that I have been able to borrow a keyboard from a friend with a musical background. This is important because if you listen to the song (shuffle) you can hear that a piano or keyboard is crucial

Bass Guitar

My brother is in his own band so I have been able to borrow his bass guitar. I do not have all the kit I will need but as far as im aware I will eb able to borrow kit such as drums, microphones and another guitar at stayfree when we are recording

Animoto Pitch Feedback

After presenting my animoto pitch to one of my teachers this is someone of the feedback that she had that we discussed:

Firstly, in my pitch I included the idea that I wanted some shots of live performance from my band which is an ok idea. But when asked about it I had little idea of where I would film it or what instruments I would borrow. So I think I need to make sure I have a clearer idea of the aspects involved in live performance.

Secondly, when discussing my concept of filming it throughout the day I elaborated on the idea of the music video appearing that the events of it are happening throughout a day. This would work throughout a day by filming at differrent times of natural brightness to create the effect of different times.

Also, my teacher expressed a concern that even though my ideas could work that maybe I dont yet have enough content for my video. Although I have considered it, I have figured I will address this when I draw my storyboard so that I have a better idea of how much content I actually have

The Real Life Band

Although I am attempting to create the persona of the band, I think it is also important to explain who exactly I will be using in my video and why I have chosen them:

On the left here is Danny White. As part of my band he will be lead singer and a bassist. I knew immediatly when I came up with the concept that I wanted to use him since I think he will be able to bring a fun element to the video and also be able to take the filming seriously to help me produce the best possible end product.

On the right here is Matt Knight. As part of my band he will be the guitarist as well as taking up a large role in the other scenes. I wanted Matt to be included in my production since he is one of my closest friends and I knew that I would be able to trust him to be fully commited to filming. Also, I think his general style of clothing fit well for a band and the particular song. Also we live in the same village which comes in connvinently for filming.

On the left here in the shirt and tie is Joe Wolski. As part of my band he will be on drums. I wanted Joe to take on this role since he has past experience on the drums so he will be able to pull of proffesional looking shots. Also, he is very good friends with the other band members which makes me believe their on camera chemistry will shine through well.

Finally, On the right is Matt Rogers. Although I have only known him for a short time I knew that he would fit since he has experience in drama which he is studying at A-Level. Also I think his humor and relax attitude will come through well, (which is why I went out of my way to convince him)

This is a drama video that matt took part in a short film that won best comedy short at Screen Stockport Film Festival 2011

Also, it is highly convient for me having these lads to use since we all go to the same college making it much easier to plan ahead as a group which means good communication amongst them :).

Story Board

This is my storyboard so far

This picture shows the first minute drawn out on story boards

This is the majority of the second minute of the song

This is from 2 minutes onwards. It is not yet finished and is currently just a few scenes put together. I don't currently think I have enough ideas to fill it and hope to as I start filming and thinking practically about the video.

Risk Assessment

One area of risk whilst filming could the use of skateboards in the video. To make Matt and Danny, who will be skateboarding, look casual they won't be wearing pads or a helmet. Also, they will also be concious of looking towards the camera and making some contact whilst skating. Another point is that they will be doing in the centre of Leicester so there will be people close and aroumnd them whilst skating. Because of this I would say maybe there is a medium risk in filming this since one of them could quite easily lose control and fall off or colide with another peson. However, i would say the risk is slightly reduced since they are both experienced on a skateboard so will be unlikely to make a small crash from falling off.

Another risk I have considered is the risk of me falling over whilst filming. Luckily, I would consider this to be very low risk since I think although some of my shots may be panning that I stay stationary from using a tripod while filming so I hopefully won't be falling over.

The use of musical equipment is another risk to consider. When heading to film the video there will be a lot of equipment to carry around which will bring some risk. Someone may injury themselves through strain of carrying equipment or injure themselves carring it since items like guitars can be quite heavy. However, I consider this to be very low risk.

Also, since some of the shots will be filmed near or by the sides of road they must be concious of the risk of tripping off the pavement and being hit by a car. Although this is very low risk it must be considered since it could have terrible results

Album Tracklist

1. How Can You Swallow So Much Sleep
2. Bad Timing

5. Take The Right One
6. Shuffle
7. Beggars
8. Leave It
9. Fracture
10. What You Want

Since the song I am using, 'Shuffle', is from the Bombay Bicycle Club Album: 'A Different Kind Of Fix' I decided to use the tracklisting from that album to make it seem more realistic since they are real songs.

Band Name Decision

I have decided to name my band 'Lego Monkeys'. After I had to rule out two of my band name ideas, one of which I wanted as my band name, due to the language used in them being innapropriate. In my mind it came down to 'Scrapheap Mojo' and 'Lego Monkeys' and after breifly asking a few members of my class ,including my teacher, Lego Monkeys generally seemed to have a better perception so I have decided to use it

Band Name Ideas

These are some ideas I had for my artist's band name:

The Fazy Luckers

Scrapheap Mojo

Fail biscuits

Lego Monkeys

Mexico Club Stampede

Twats Like Us

Unfourtunatly, although I wanted to make my band name 'Twats Like Us' I had to consider the marketing of an album. Firstly, through using rude language the artists songs would not be able to be played on the radio since the name would not be able to be used. Also, currently one of the main franchises for selling albums is in supermarkets which are designed for family use so an album with rude language would not get stocked. I think this also crosses out 'The Fazy Luckers' aswell :(

Location shots

The first location I will be using is the target room at a band practice building called Stayfree Music Leicester. The idea came when I suggested to my teacher that I needed to find a space to shot band shots, another member of my class recomended it since his band uses it actually to perform as a band. Since I haven't been there yet I have found these pictures on the website of the room I have hired: http://www.stayfreemusic.co.uk/?page_id=20
I have booked to use this room on Saturday 13th October for an hour to film this since this was when the band members where most avalible.

The Artist Profile

The music artist is a 4 piece indie rock band from Leicester

The Artist name is Lego Monkeys

They are a band of 4 young lads who gained fame and success from posting songs on YouTube, touring around the UK and their newest single which is highly anticipated. They are all friends originally from Leicester who met at college and upon leaving decided to make their band full time rather then moving into employment. They are all out going but there is nothing they like more then playing live concerts for their fans. They keep fans up to date with the band through using social networking sites such as Twitter and Myspace. Their future ambition is to take their music style to America and then around the world.

Use of Black and White

When considering my own digipak i like the idea of using black and white images. These are some examples that i found that I like:

Animoto Pitch

Audience Profile

The genre of our music video is Hip Hop so the main target audience will be people who enjoy Hip Hop. However, we have put a twist in the video which can also relate to people who play sport as we have twisted Hip Hop with sport. In the UK (using UK tribes) the group of people who our video will relate to most is the Get Paid Crew, these are people who think a lot about money and aspire to people like JAY Z (who is a Hip Hop rapper). As we are twisting the video with sport, it can also relate to the UK tribe Sport Junkies. These are the people who have devoted their lives to sport since they were born. Our video is based on people growing up with sport and has a hip hop song in the background which adds the twist to it. The age of our target audience can pretty much be any one as we have decided on making our video inspiring so all people can enjoy it. But with the Hip Hop song playing in the background, we think that song is more linked to people in their teens to mid 20's as it is an old song but has a very catchy beat to it. It is also mainly just men from 14-26 but the music video itself can be enjoyed by everyone.
